Thomas Santarius obtained his Medical Doctor degree from the Universita Palackeho in Olomouc, Czech Republic, with multiple prizes and scholarships. As a student he was actively involved in the Velvet Revolution, which eventually ended the communist dictatorship in Czechoslovakia in 1989. Following graduation he spent over two years as a clinical and research fellow at the Children’s Hospital, Brigham and Women’s Hospital, Harvard University in Boston, USA before moving to the UK in 1997. Dr. Santarius completed neurosurgical training at the Addenbrooke’s Hospital in Cambridge where in 2012 he was appointed a consultant. Apart from Cambridge he underwent additional neurosurgical training at the Atkinson’s Morley Hospital, St George’s University in London, Great Ormond Street Hospital in London, University of California at San Francisco Medical Center and Montpellier in France.

Dr. Santarius’ current practice focuses mainly on brain tumour surgery in both adult and paediatric patients, including complex techniques for extrinsic and intrinsic supratentorial and posterior fossa tumours. He performs endoscopic pituitary surgery in partnership with his ENT colleagues. He is a great believer in perfection and this is reflected in his meticulous operative techniques with extreme attention to details in each step of surgery. He is actively involved in teaching and training and serves as faculty and invited speaker on many training courses in the UK and overseas. He is one of the pioneers in the development of 3D recording of surgical procedures in neurosurgery for educational purposes. He is co-founder and organiser of the Cambridge Lectures in Neurosurgical Anatomy.

Dr. Santarius has an extensive experience with basic neuroscience and genetic research. He trained and conducted basic science research at Harvard University and at the Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute in Cambridge following which he was awarded the PhD degree from the University of Cambridge in 2009. His publications relate to basic science of cancer and neurosurgery, including a landmark paper in the management of chronic subdural haematomas for which he was the main investigator and author. He serves as a reviewer for a number of scientific journals and a member of the Editorial Board of Acta Neurochirurgica. He is a member of the Neurosurgical Anatomy Committee of the World Federation of Neurosurgical Societies (WFNS). He was elected in 2015 to the World Academy of Neurological Surgery.

Dr. Kirollos moved to Singapore in June 2018 after training and practicing in UK, spending the last 17 years as a consultant neurosurgeon in Addenbrooke's Cambridge University hospital. Dr. Kirollos is a Clinical Associate Professor in Duke-NUS Medical school and a senior consultant neurosurgeon at the National Neuroscience Institute in Singapore covering Tan Tock Seng, Singapore General and KK children's hospitals specialising in adult and paediatric neurovascular and skull base surgery. This is a tertiary referral centre for Singapore and parts of South East Asia and affiliated academically to Duke-NUS. Fully involved in teaching and training of the Singapore residency program. He is a Fellow of the Academy of Medicine of Singapore (FAMS) and council member of the Society of Neurovascular Intervention & Surgery of Singapore. Dr. Kirollos graduated from the Medical School at the University of Alexandria in Egypt in 1984. In 1987, he moved to the United Kingdom to pursue his post-graduate medical education. He received the prestigious Royal College of Surgeons of England Hallett Prize given to the candidate with the highest score at the fellowship examination (FRCS Eng). Dr. Kirollos trained in neurosurgery at the Atkinson Morley Hospital in London, the Frenchay Hospital in Bristol, the Leeds General Infirmary, and the Walton Centre for Neurology and Neurosurgery in Liverpool. He obtained the higher academic degree of Doctor of Medicine for his research into photodynamic therapy of pituitary adenomas. Dr. Kirollos completed a skull base fellowship under Dr. Gentili at the Toronto Western Hospital. In 2001, he was appointed Consultant Neurosurgeon at the Addenbrooke’s Cambridge University Hospital and associate lecturer in Cambridge University clinical school until June 2018. His main clinical interests include skull base, pituitary and pineal surgery, and surgical treatment of AVMs. In addition to extensive and comprehensive open and endoscopic skull base operative experience, he has performed over 750 aneurysm and 200 AVM operations. He was in the past the President of the British Neurovascular Group, President and co-founder of the British-Irish Meningioma Society, member of the postgraduate educational committee of the EANS, ex officio member of the SBNS council as representative for the SBNS to the EANS and WFNS and a member of the neuro-oncology committee of the WFNS. Dr. Kirollos has over 115 publications, 110 presentations, 75 invited lectures and written few chapters and books and is the co-editor of the Oxford Textbook of Neurosurgery. Dr. Kirollos has been actively involved in day-to-day teaching of medical students, junior and middle grade neurosurgical trainees. Dr. Kirollos co-founded and directed the Cambridge lectures in Neurosurgical Anatomy in 2005 and the British Neurosurgical Trainee Courses in 2010 and serves as a faculty on the Neuroanatomy of Operative Approaches since its conception in 2005 and numerous national and international courses. In 2006 Dr. Kirollos was elected as a member of the Court of Examiners of the Royal College of Surgeons of England. For his commitment to surgical education, he received the prestigious Silver Scalpel Award in 2010.

Dr. Trivedi has a busy clinical practice in general neurosurgery, undertaking between 300-400 cases per year.

He has specialist interests in spinal, cerebrovascular and skull base surgery having received specialist training in these areas during his training as a Registrar in Cambridge and Fellow in Miami, USA. Whilst on fellowship, he gained proficiency in minimally invasive surgery techniques and performed the first keyhole lumbar discectomy in the region, shortly after his return.

Dr. Trivedi’s research interests to date have been in developing novel imaging techniques for assessment of vascular disease and have evolved to evaluate novel strategies in the treatment of spinal disorders. He has supervised numerous research student projects and has trained fellows in both cerebrovascular and spine surgery. Dr. Trivedi’s publications are listed in PubMed.

Dr. Trivedi is a keen educator. He is popular with his trainees at home and serves as a faculty on a number of regular and ad hoc neurosurgical courses in the UK and abroad. He is a founder of the Approaches in Neurovascular Surgery and a regular faculty at the Cambridge Lectures in Neurosurgical Anatomy.
